Damn uni robs my weekend again

One massive essay down, one to go, only 28 hours and 3,000 words left! (Well not entirely true, we did have dinner at my fav Thai restaurant on Saturday night and watched Attack of the Clones). Quick comments on ATOC, I went in with really really low expectations and was actually quite impressed.

The good: (spoliers ahead): There were some classic referrences in there to previous Star Wars movies and other sci-fi shows as well. Lord Dooku looked like the commander off Battlestar Galacitca, it looked like the same uniform and actor as well (I could be wrong).

Floating cars and that massive nose dive down to ground level dodging traffic in the hover car. Bladerunner and Fifth Element all over again.

The shot of Anakin’s robotic right arm near the end was particularly symbolic, as he heads down the path of becoming “more machine now that man, twisted and evil”, especially as it’s that same robotic arm that Luke lightsabers off in ROTJ.

The asteroid field chase between Obi Wan and Jenga Fett, chasing him into the big chasm, very much like the ESB chase, except they come out the otherside and everyone is relieved they haven’t just flown into the belly of some giant asteroid dwelling worm.

The young Bobba Fett, not a son, but a clone, who’d have guessed! Nice touch on the engine sounds, very cool. Same original actor playing C3PO. Heaps of aussies and kiwis in the cast, but definitely more speaking roles to the kiwis. Some very nice scenery in there, especially Lake Como in Italy. Lots of cool gadgets as well.

But of course, ninja Yoda takes the cake, how cool!

The bad: I thought the whole Anakin and Padme relationship was rushed and superficial. I really just didn’t get into it. Also far too much use of background music. Every single word of dialogue doesn’t require music! It was almost continuous, and even very obviously and tackily synced to their lines in one of the romantic scenes.

Jar-Jar was still in it, although to a far more tolerable degree. Of course, we all know the evil George Lucas is just lowering our Jar-Jar defences, and he will return with avengance in episode III, catching out everyone who thought based on II it will be safe to see III.
