The Talent Myth: Are smart people overrated?

I'm sure I remember seeing and possibly even linking to this article when it did the rounds of weblogs six months ago, at any rate I thought it was worth linking to again. Not that I necessarily agree with the underlying assertions on the failure of performance and reward based management approaches, however it's an interesting perspective, and certainly sticks the knife into management consultants and Harvard MBA's which is always entertaining in itself. A good read. (note, I'm only half-way through reading it..) [via Koeneman]http://www.gladwell.com/2002/2002_07_22_a_talent.htm

This article seems to confirm my suspicion that corporations are encouraging and rewarding short-term thinking rather than long-term thinking. Enron wasn’t concerned with having a viable long-term business. Their strategy seemed to be “if we worry about now and join all of those ‘nows’ together we will be fine”.
Walmart on the other hand seems to worry more about ensuring the long-term viability of the organisation.
