Almost everything you ever wanted to know about Anthony Hicks in 2008:
I'm a 32 year old Australian currently living in East London, UK. I'm a music loving, technology obsessive, gadget collecting, aircraft enthusiast and science fiction nut who enjoys travel, fine food, good friends and working hard.
For the past several years I've worked as technical consultant and software developer mainly in web-based groupware, information sharing and collaboration style applications.
I kicked off my software and consulting career in 1994 in Sydney, Australia with The Atlas Consulting Group, and then moved on to the respected Com Tech Communications (now Dimension Data) where I rode out the Internet boom and beyond in the Online division. The Com Tech/Dimension Data days were fantastic -- smart people, demanding projects, the latest technologies and high profile clients. My roles involved high levels of client contact with companies in a variety of industry sectors, applying technical solutions to all sorts of business problems.
In 2002, I left Dimension Data to finish my university studies full-time (BBus Ecom & Mgmt) and relocated to London, UK. From the end of 2003 until mid-2006 I worked for a large investment bank in the city doing java and web applications for BlackBerry. I now work for the European division of a well known Silicon Valley company in the e-commerce and online payments sector.
My personal interests in 2007 include music (techno, trance, house and electronica); travel (focusing on Europe, Asia and Africa); relaxing with friends; checking out new restaurants, bars, cafes and clubs; collecting the latest gadgets; mainstream and art house movies; fashion and shopping; dabbling with half-finished personal projects; science fiction tv, films and literature; popular science and technology; aviation and space.
I'm a bit of aviation buff too, whether it be watching them or flying them. So far I've finished about 50 hours towards my private pilot’s license and reached solo flying standard. In September 2006 I made my first international flight, piloting a Diamond Star DA40 from the UK to The Netherlands and back. I've also completing two hours of helicopter lessons which I'd like to continue after finishing my fixed wing license.
Having worked for several years in mixed business and technical roles, I've been looking for new challenges and had seriously considered becoming either a commercial pilot or finally letting the entrepreneurial side of me loose on a business venture of some description. We'll see what happens in the future..
For now I'm staying with computing, with a focus on Internet related technologies and their utilisation for business, particularly when it comes to portals, mobile wireless applications, collaboration and e-commerce.
In 2007 I plan to continue to work and travel where possible in the European region. After Europe I'd love to live and work in the USA possibly New York City or San Francisco, and then Asia (maybe Japan) in 2009 or 2010, before finally returning to Australia (maybe). I’d also like to squeeze in an MBA at some point.
