Google AdWords results
Posted on 17. Apr, 2002
Ok then, experiment over. For a US$15 campaign that resulted in 1,712 impressions of my ad, I achieved a 0.64% click-thru rate or 11 visits. Two of those visits don't count as they were made by people I know testing the ad, so it's actually 9 visits. See the full report.

Google AdWords fun
Posted on 16. Apr, 2002
I was just procrastinating from a uni essay I'm supposed to be writing, so I thought I'd blow US$15 and have a play with the Google AdWords system. I've posted 1,000 impressions for "blogs", "blog", "weblog", "weblogs", "australian weblogs", "australian blogs", "technology blog" and "technology weblog" to see what I get through. Hello if you clicked my Google Ad, yes, I've been blogging for years and I'm desperate for your readership.. heh, not. Thanks for participating in my little experiment.

Just Choose It Later

Bugger! One of my favourite sites has shutdown! Blurb from their site: "AdCritic.com has enjoyed a sucessful life as a leader in the area of archiving television and radio advertising and related information for both consumers and the advertising industry. Our business, although strong, has been unable to weather the current economic realities beseiging the United States today. The short answer: we became so popular so fast that we couldn't stay afloat!"

It’s no fun without the ads!
Posted on 14. May, 2001
See how dull CNN is without the ads? Interesting approach though, I've never seen a site redirect to a separate personalised site just for web crawlers. I'd be adding a user-agent detection in there to block anyone who's clearly a web browser user though.

More BigFatRadio praise
Posted on 30. Aug, 2000
Once again, I'm VERY impressed with BigFatRadio, they've started doing advertising, but they're doing it in a way I've never seen on any other web site.
Instead of relying solely on an audio voice over to plug their advertisers, or displaying banner ads on the site, they actually display the site they're plugging in the site frame. As they're discussing items for sale they go to the pages with that information, the voice over is completely synchronised with the web pages pushed to the listener.
This has to be one of the MOST effective forms of web advertising yet, telling the listener about the site and taking them to it, all while making the experience relatively palatable as listening to BigFatRadio is all about having sites pushed to listeners as they talk about them.
This may well become a very popular technique for advertisers and broadcasters on the net in the future. BFR rock!

AbsolutDJ.com

The AbsolutDJ site, apart from being a shameless promotional web site for yummy Absolut Vodka, it actually has some clever Shockwave. There's a brief history of DJing, sample tracks by five well known DJs and a mixing interface where you can create your own tunes. Absolut Vodka ads are probably my favourite ads of all time, especially the print ads that regularly appear in WIRED. [links to a review of the site at Afterhour]

More on IP targeting
Posted on 17. Oct, 1999
From the article: "For a month or so earlier this year, DoubleClick Inc., an Internet advertising firm based in New York, furtively put up three different editions of its home page. Most visitors saw one version, highlighting the firm's accomplishments. Employees of a rival firm could see only another version, with a special press release touting DoubleClick's capture of one of the rival's customers. Clients being wooed saw only a third version."
