Planet Mirror founder responds to Whirlpool peanut gallery

Meant to comment on this a couple of weeks ago: Not soon after Jason Andrade launched the premium PlanetMirror plans in conjunction with BigPond, he copped a fair amount of flack on the Whirlpool forums, mainly from idiots. There were however some valid comments about a monthly subscription versus pay-for-usage, as people were concerned they wouldn't be able to use their whole 3GB each month (although, I'm assuming the $19.95 is heavily discounted and dependant on this fact). Despite the negative comments, I still reckon a premium mirror like PlanetMirror is a good thing for Australia, the problem they face however is battling the mindset of users expecting all downloads to be free as opposed to paying a very modest amount for what could be a good long term service. More on this later, I'll be watching this one with interest.

In 2002 Hope Must Turn To Humility

Niki's latest column:

"The environment through which the commercial Internet was created could best be described as a mix of fanaticism, greed and hurried execution. To think that we have worked out the correct and optimal ways of selling goods and services over the medium would be naive. It's for this reason that 2002 must see a great attention toward evolution."

Internet World Australia 2001

I'll be at the Internet World conference all day tomorrow, taking a primarily wireless track, although 9am keynote speaker Danni Ashe should also be interesting. We all know what one of the most profitable business models on the internet has turned out to be, it's good to see it taking out the opening day keynote. I've never bothered to attend an Internet World conference and always sniggered at those who did, but the gold pass came my way last week so I thought I'd take the opportunity to check it out. I'll post an amusing (probably cynical) mini-review in the next couple of days I guess.

I must be on the same wavelength as Niki Scevak from australia.internet.com this week, we've written about the similar things over the past couple of days, of course Niki's articles are far more comprehensive, well researched and interesting than mine.

"'WE'VE GOT TO HURRY,' he says. 'We got a tip he leaves the house at 5:30.' His quarry is a computer-company worker who recently lost his job. The man's loss is Mr. Kevern's gain. Mr. Kevern is a repo man, and the boom times are finally returning for his industry in Silicon Valley." [via Eugene]

An intersting read, highly recommended. "Founded in 1994 by Web-browser innovator Marc Andreessen and Jim Clark, Netscape Communications Corp. was built on the Silicon Valley recipe of outstanding technological innovation mixed with the leadership of a charismatic CEO -- in this case, Jim Barksdale -- and the undying energy of a brilliant and youthful staff who truly believed they were shaping the future."
