Google Earth has an image of my car in Sydney
Posted on 15. Jul, 2005
I can see my car parked in the driveway of my parents house back in Australia in the latest Digital Globe imagery of Northern Sydney on Google Earth. That's so cool that I can bring up an aerial image of my car back in Sydney! The image is quite up-to-date too as it shows the more recent backyard pool additions and sub-divisions.

Quick piece on the civility of city (Sydney) and stabbings.
A mate of mine also got stabbed in the chest several weeks ago while walking home from work in Gladesville. The robber got $5 and a crappy mobile phone, while my mate went into intensive care for a few days to make sure he didn't spring any leaks in any vital places. What's with inner city Sydney these days, or has it always been like this and I'm just hearing more of it? Dodgy.

Sticky at the Opera House Forecourt
Posted on 07. Jan, 2003
Just got back from watching Sticky at the Opera House forecourt. I have mixed reactions about this, generally I thought it was good, and certainly an original use of sticky tape, but the actual sticky tape tower wasn't that impressive. But Anthony it's performance art, you've got to look at it as a whole I hear you cry, and I'll pay that: combined with a great electronica score, very close up fireworks, and subtle lighting, the complete spectacle of the sticky tape tower and everything going on around it was impressive.
There's two performances left in Sydney, you should go, but get there early as hundreds of people were turned back tonight and had to watch it from the street. I will post some pics as soon as I get some spare time.

Bush fire situation exploiters and pranksters
Posted on 08. Dec, 2002
I've been listening to the police scanner a fair bit during the bush fires. It's amazing how many nutcases and exploiters come out to take advantage of the fires. Some of things mentioned include a door-to-door salesman going around homes in Berowra trying to sell water pumps, people playing pranks on their neighbours telling them they need to evacuate as the fires are coming, and unauthorised people randomly wandering the streets chopping down trees with chainsaws.
New pics..

Finally got around to programming a bulk loader for my images, it's so much easier to put them online now.. I've posted the Star Wars Exhibition and a few smokey sunsets from the other night caused by the current bush fires in Sydney.
Unconfirmed reports of helicopter crash..
Posted on 05. Dec, 2002
6:16PM: Hot off the radio, not yet hit media. Just listening to the police scanner where they suspect a helicopter (related to the bush fires) has crashed at Galston. Police are currently searching the area where witnesses believe it went down.
UPDATE: Nothing further on this, the witnesses were convinced they saw a chopper go onto it's side and crash, but all choppers are accounted for. People see funny things when they're stressed/excited don't they.

Protest is toast
Posted on 08. Nov, 2002
Ah yes, excellent: "Residents in the luxury "Toaster" apartments have lost a battle to stop the Opera House forecourt being used as a 12-hour entertainment venue."
Look, I can see their side of the argument, but honestly when you live right next door to a major tourist attraction and a premiere concert venue, you've got to expect that sometimes there'll be times when events are going to be better outdoors, especially as the forecourt is one of the most suitable outdoor locations on the harbour for a concert.
Add to this the use of the park area just opposite the toaster for the night noodle market on Macquarie Street, and I'm sure the toaster residents feel everyone is surrounding them, looking in their windows, and keeping them awake at night. Which is certainly what we were doing one night at the Noodle Market as we sat back on the PVC chairs, enjoyed our Thai food and played voyeur to all the different goings on by the toaster residents.
It all goes back to the old arguments by Sydney wowsers who live next to pubs and complain about live bands and other pub related noise. It's their right to complain, I don't deny that, but if you live next to a major venue or night spot in the inner city, you make certain sacrifices. You can't expect all life to stop in the city after 9pm so you can have a good nights sleep, other people in this city actually have a life. (wow, I was being so cool about this when I started making this post, now I am cranky :)

M5 East
Posted on 10. Feb, 2002
I used the M5 East for the first time today, what an absolute pleasure. I can get from my home to Bankstown Airport in around 30 minutes, with 90% of journey non-stop along the Gore Hill Fwy, Harbour Tunnel, Eastern Distributor, M5 East and finally the M5, exiting at Henry Lawson Drive. All seamlessly connected, I'm very impressed! It takes 20-30 mins off my travel time. That's one long tunnel too, by Sydney standards anyway.

North Shore Tax
Posted on 15. Jan, 2002
Further to my post a couple of days ago about the increased bridge toll being a tax on North Shoreans to fund roads in the West, SMH has a list of roadworks mostly in Western Sydney that will begin early this year as a result of the additional funds raised by the increased bridge toll.

$3.00 Bridge Toll
Posted on 12. Jan, 2002
Generally, I'm all for tolls and don't worry at all when tolls are raised, as it helps to make life difficult for people who won't use public transport, and I like that. Anyway a relative, who is, lets just say well connected in these matters, described the toll increase as a tax on the people who live in the North to fund roads in the West. Interesting way of looking at it, I hadn't thought of it like that, but I tend to agree.
Tell Sydney’s shooshers to shove off
Posted on 07. Jan, 2002
Triple J's Steve Cannane discusses the effect whingers in new residential zones are having on long established pubs, clubs and live venues across Sydney, through imposing noise and hours restrictions and how: "It's these kinds of people who are turning Sydney into a soulless city, a city in which bands are forced to play acoustic, parties are shut down and laughter is muffled."

Visions from the Underworld

A collection of fascinating pictures of drains, tunnels, reservoirs, silos, power stations, bridge pylons and other abandoned or forbidden areas in the urban environment around Sydney and Melbourne. Definitely worth a look. I'd love to do this stuff again.
The Wharf
Posted on 20. Aug, 2000

The Wharf at Woolloomooloo is impressive. We had a look at one of the display apartments a few weeks back, very nice. The Wharf features The W Hotel, bars, cafes and restaurants, a private marina and a residential section with every unit offering harbour views. All in all a brilliant job by the developers converting a dreary old wharf into such a diverse property.

The Canon webcam is situated on the 36th floor of the ANA Hotel at Circular Quay in Sydney. You can control the camera position and zoom using a java applet, neat.
surprising find
Posted on 24. Jan, 2000
I went to a wedding reception on the weekend at the Dawn Fraser Pool in Balmain. Great location, I never knew this place existed. This Victorian period corrugated iron and wood structure was built in 1883, it is tucked below the sandstone cliffs of Elkington Park. I can't say I'd rush to swim in water from Sydney Harbour though.
