Interesting Thread on XML-based Doco
Posted on 09. Sep, 2001
"Slashdot has a remarkably intelligent thread on how to build an XML based documentation system. Reminds me of the strengths of the SGML-based documentation system ISSC ran.. less time wasted on formatting, more time spent on content." [via CM]

Data, Know Thyself By Robert X. Cringely
Posted on 23. Apr, 2001
Cringley's recent article on XML is worth a look, however read it with this in mind: "To the experts who breathe XML, what I write will inevitably look naive and maybe even incorrect. To the lay readers of this column, it might read like gibberish. So I've lain this week in a fetal position and tried to connect emotionally with both groups. What follows is my take on the real meaning of XML. If you think I'm stupid, well maybe so. Just don't tell my Mom."

Excellent tool: "The IBM XSL Editor application allows a user to import, create, and save Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) style sheets and Extensible Markup Language (XML) source documents. The XSL stylesheet editor incorporates trace function and provides assistance with writing select and match expressions. It integrates XSL Trace with the Visual Transform tool, both available on alphaWorks."

Possible XML patent
Posted on 01. Aug, 2000
TBFT points out that the Information Architects patent no. 5,983,267
relating to syndicated web content may lead to iA attempting to charge for the use of RSS, RDF etc. I dunno about that, I read the patent, it's pretty general - we'll see I guess. [via TT]

XUL
Posted on 08. Mar, 2000
XUL is an XML schema for describing elements of rich graphical user interfaces such as popup menus. It has been in Zope for the past few months and is also used to control menus and the navigation bar in recent releases of Mozilla. Something to keep an eye on anyway. [link via CamWorld]

I was having a look through the aecXML schema for the Architectural, Engineering and Construction industry the other day and couldn't help but laugh at one of the element types for describing the status of a Document:

So many schemas under development

"The XML Catalog lists organizations known to be producing industry-specific or cross-industry XML Specifications. The XML Catalog is intended to evolve into the XML.ORG Registry & Repository for XML Schemas, DTDs and specifications." Definitely worth a look. A great research reference if you're ever looking for a XML status snapshot of a particular industry segment.
