Absolutely loving my Xbox 360 at 1080p in high definition and surround sound. I was so late to the party here, how have I lived this long without one? Loving Dirt, Prey, Darkness and Rainbox Six: Vegas. Xbox Live is great. Very impressive little box for the money. Triple core, great graphics. I will buy a PS3 when more games come out, console wars — who cares just buy them all! The 360 is a noisy little bugger though.

Half Life 2 activation woes

Posted on 18 Nov 2004 in Gaming

As expected there’s a WhineDot thread on the Half Life 2 activation debacle. For me, activation took around 4 hours of continual retries through various steps of the process using the Steam client, and when I finally did advance past user account creation prompts (up to 5 minutes wait per prompt per attempt!) without server errors and timeouts, my key could not be processed anyway due to server load and I was granted “temporary” access to my game, where by it then proceeded to decrypt the game files and I was able to play. While I agree that drastic measures are required to curb piracy, the Steam infrastructure was clearly not up to task. I was quite annoyed that I was not able to instantly access and play a game I’d legitimately paid for and installed off the original DVD-ROM. Temporary access was a good measure, but should have been available sooner in the registration process so I didn’t have to continually retry for 3 hours before getting to that stage of the activation. Why anyone would ever bother to PAY for a subscription through Steam now is beyond me, as clearly their infrastructure is poor. I wonder how long before my CD Key is validated and my “temporary” access becomes permanent.

I’m running Half Life 2 on my new machine/graphics card at 1280×1024 in high quality mode with 4 x anti-aliasing, it looks stunning. The game is, as we all hoped, amazing! There go my normal sleep patterns again.

Dismount!

Truck Dismount and Stair Dismount are excellent! In both cases you need to cause as much damage possible to your victim by either pushing him down a flight of stairs or by using a truck driven into a wall. Don’t let the simple description turn you off, there are a number of variables and environment factors you control to cause the maximum amount of damage to your victim. Lots of fun, I managed to get the truck to drive over the guy, then rebound off the wall and come back and crush him again under the back tire for bonus points. Another trick is to position the ramp so the truck flips over throwing the victim out and then lands on top of him inflicting serious damage. With stair dismount, I found a medium jab to the left or right foot at a 45 degree angle seemed to cause quite a bit of torso damage as he rolled down the steps. Highly recommended. [via Hear Ye!]

Half-Life 2 E3 2003 Teaser!

Every serious PC gamer is now drooling with anticipation following the Half Life 2 movie from E3. As someone who is starting to get a bit bored with PC games, I can say that Half-Life 2 looks nothing short of spectacular and kicks butt over pretty much anything else out there, arguably on any platform. Sure you’ll need super computer to run it, but it’s more than worth it. The graphics, realism and physics engine are incredible. If you’re not living in the 1980’s of modems I highly recommend downloading the 600MB QuckTime movie featuring a 25 minute presentation of the rendering and physics engine and shows quite a bit of game play, there’s also a short 17MB DivX trailer. Just when you think games can’t get any better. I’m really hanging for Half Life 2 now.

No more games

One thing I’ve managed to do over the past few months is completely ween myself off games. I was clocking far too many wasted hours per month playing Battlefield 1942 and the recent Desert Combat mod. I’ve also resisted several times upgrading to a new Radeon 9700 Pro as it will just reignite my desire to play games. I guess I’ve finished my transition from hardcore to casual to non-gamer.

The Australia Council has put $25k into the game (possibly a mod) where players can try to escape from four of Australia’s most notorious immigration detention centres. Ruddock is unimpressed as you’d expect.

Desert Combat 0.3n

Desert Combat 0.3n is out, with some notable unit additions including the UH-60 Black Hawk, AV8B Harrier, M124D Hind, SU-25 and in keeping with current events the Iraq team can be equiped with suicide bombers. For those who haven’t tried it, Desert Combat is a Battlefield 1942 mod that upgrades all the units to modern day equivalents. The selection and versatility of the weapons available is impressive. My favourite is flying the Apache, which is a challenge as it’s quite an easy target for troops when hovering over the battlefield.

Battlefield 1942: Road to Rome

As an hopeless addict of the brilliant Battlefield 1942, I’m happy (worried) to hear a new expansion pack is coming out next week to continue sucking my time away. Road to Rome looks very promising, adding six new missions in Italy and France. The big highlight is of course lots of new mechanical units and weapons, as well as the addition of French and Italian troops. The great thing about BF19242 is that you’re more than just a solider running around with a gun. Every unit whether it be a jeep, tank, bomber, fighter plane, tank, APC, anti-aircraft gun, battleship, destroyer, aircraft carrier, or submarine can be fully controlled. The battleship is particulary fun for blasting forces landing on a beach, or when on land use an anti-aircraft gun to shoot down wannabe hot shot pilots in Spitfires, or fly the B17 bomber on devastating carpet bombing runs of enemy tanks. There’s also a heavy teamwork aspect where for example, you can play as a scout and then call in massive artillery fire barrages from destroyers and battleships waiting miles off shore. The game has been accused of glorifying war, but it’s not hurting as it is now the second most popular online game behind Counter-Strike. To get a feel for the diverstiy of gameplay in BF42, I highly recommend downloading the 17MB the Road to Rome QuickTime preview .

Gaming movies, the new way to show your L33+N355

Posted on 16 Jan 2003 in Gaming

Something I’ve been meaning to comment on for ages is the growing trend of making gaming movies. As they’re free on Telstra GamesArena servers, I often grab them so I can feel the buzz of downloading 300MB through Tel$tra’s network without being charged for it. Anyway, I disgress, some of the movies are actually very well done. They’re usually well edited in Adobe Premiere, complete with titles, credits, and a good soundtrack. Some are in the form of an action drama, with scripted voices overs by the players, with the actors being the characters in the game. For example, a Terrorist hostage rescue movie made in Counter-Strike, complete with a touch of political intrigue and blood rivalry. Most of the movies are UT, Q2, Q3A, RTCW or Half-Life trick movies demonstrating impressive explosive assisted jumps and stunts, or just incredible non-stop killing rallies but players with reflexes far beyond that of any normal player.

Here’s a few of my recent favourites. All of these are highly recommended, but at the very least download the Battlefield 1942 Insane Stunt Movie, it’s a crack up, and no you’re not supposed to be doing that in the jeeps or having 20 people riding on the wings of the B-17 bomber (Battlefield 1942 is such a cool game):

Battlefield 1942 Insane Stunt Bonus Movie
Battlefield 1942 Omaha Beach Movie
Oaned Quake 3 Rocket Arena Movie
RTCW Frag Movie by Clan Apical
Quake 3 2ex Movie
Unreal Tournament Fooze Fragmovie
Battlefield 1942 Flyboys Movie

Natural Selection

Natural Selection is built on the popular Half-Life engine and looks interesting:

“Natural Selection is a hybrid first-person/real-time strategy game. There is a resource model, a tech tree, structures and upgrades, just like a traditional RTS (like Starcraft or Command and Conquer). It is mostly played in first-person, but one player can become the Commander and plays from a top-down perspective.”
