Looking Back on 2012 #
What started as a neglected corner of the internet in March blossomed into an unexpected chronicle of London’s Olympic summer. Through just six posts, I managed to capture some fascinating moments of a transformative time in the city’s history.
The Emirates Airline Cable Car: A New Icon #
The Thames Cable Car (later branded as the Emirates Airline) featured prominently in my summer coverage. My sunset ride on July 24th offered a unique perspective of London’s evolving skyline. This £60 million project was part of Transport for London’s broader initiative to expand river crossings, connecting the O2 Arena in Greenwich with the Royal Docks. Little did I know when recording that peaceful sunset journey that the cable car would later serve as a backdrop for one of my most memorable posts - capturing a Navy Super Lynx helicopter flying beneath it during the Olympics.
Olympic Security: A City on Guard #
Perhaps the most historically significant content I documented was the Rapier missile battery installation on Blackheath Common. This was part of Operation Olympics Guardian, which represented the largest peacetime security operation in modern British history. The deployment of surface-to-air missiles across London rooftops and open spaces was unprecedented, reflecting the extraordinary security measures deemed necessary for hosting the 2012 Games.
A Tale of Two Cities #
My experience from Sydney 2000 proved invaluable in understanding London’s Olympic transformation. The post “Dear Moaning Londoners” captured a unique moment of vindication - when the predicted transportation apocalypse gave way to eerily quiet streets. The parallels between Sydney and London’s Olympic experiences showed how megaevents can temporarily reshape urban life in surprisingly similar ways across different continents and decades.
Behind the Scenes #
Even my more mundane posts, like the cable management behind my TV, reflected the year’s broader themes of infrastructure and organization. While waiting for that “elevated double floor cavity,” I was inadvertently documenting the small ways we all prepared for change.
Looking Forward #
While my blogging activity tapered off after the Olympics, these six posts now serve as a time capsule of a remarkable summer. From military hardware on historic commons to cutting-edge urban transport, 2012 was a year when London’s past and future collided in spectacular fashion.
The Emirates Airline still crosses the Thames, a more peaceful legacy than the temporary missile batteries. Both remind us of that extraordinary summer when London transformed itself for the world stage, and I was there to document small but significant pieces of the story.
